Gas Combo 3 Water Heater

Gas Combo 3 Water Heater

Natural gas combo systems use a hot water tank connected to an air-handler (sometimes called a fan-coil unit) to supply both forced-air space heating and domestic hot water heating.

These new systems are rapidly gaining a share of the residential market despite the fact that there are no specific standards for assessing their combined performance and little infrastructure to support the industry that is designing, installing and servicing the product in the field.

This project is intended to answer the following questions:

Gas Combo 3 Air Handler

Gas Combo 3 Air Handler

  • How well does the PDV combo meet the separate loads of water heating and space conditioning?
  • How well does the PDV combo system perform in the field and how well can we predict that performance in the lab?
  • Could the performance be improved with better design, better controls/control strategies, and better installation?
  • How do combos compare to separate gas-fired furnaces and water heaters?

Another objective of testing and monitoring at the CCHT is to establish the link between performance at rated conditions and typical field operating conditions.
