Hydrogen Electrolyzer

Electrolyzer

Electrolyzer

In late 2005, StART Corporation and Natural Resources Canada established a research project with Integrated Energy Systems Laboratory to assess the energy performance of a hybrid hydrogen electrolyzer/high efficiency furnace system. The electrolyzer produces hydrogen from water using electricity, in turn this hydrogen was used to supplement the natural gas supply of the furnace. The hybrid energy system was adapted and installed in a single detached house at the CCHT and the energy performance was compared to the energy performance of an identical high efficiency furnace in an identical house next door. Prior to the start of this project a similar hybrid system set up was investigated in the Hybrid Energy Systems Laboratory (HESL)/ CANMET Energy Technology Centre. In that study, the hybrid system was subjected to a variety of steady state and cycling tests and a detailed performance analysis was performed with a range of hydrogen/natural gas mixtures.
